Glasgow North

I had to go over to the north of the city for a physio appointment the other day and while in the area I thought I would visit one of my favourite Rogue-One murals, the Cowlairs Incline, on Endrick Street, just off Keppochhill Road.  That led me on to the corner of Hawthorn Street and Balmore road to photograph another of his pieces I have intended photographing for a while, his depiction of a speedway rider advertising the local team, The Glasgow Tigers.  As it was a nice sunny day, I then took a stroll along the banks of the Forth & Clyde canal where I spotted a nice wee naive mural in a wall near the Ruchill church, I couldn’t find out anything about who painted it and why.

You never know what you will find when out wandering, while at the canal bank, I met 2 young guys who were ‘magnetic fishing’!  Instead of a hook on the end of their lines they had strong magnets, their catch so far that day was a bicycle, a couple of scooters, several bunches of keys and a knuckle duster.  For some reason or other, they didn’t want their photograph taken.

SWG3 Today

I had to visit the homebrew shop in Whiteinch for supplies, so I nipped into SWG3 while I was in the area, the place was busy with loads of metalheads there for the Lords of the Land festival, lots of long hair, leather and torn jeans, and bands I have never heard of, from what I could hear, it was pretty loud music!

It was good to see some new artwork in the yard, I was pleased to see that Mark Worst has finished the portrait I spotted him starting in January, noticed that Scent is developing his skills and a lot of good work by EJEK with AERS, SMUG amongst others.  It looks like they are gearing up for this year’s Yardworks in May.

Deeply Dippy

I had a busy day yesterday, I originally headed into town to take a dip into volunteering at the International Swimming Centre at Tollcross, my shift was cancelled so I returned to the city centre, where I had a chance meeting with Smug, who was doing a commission piece in Millar Street.  I’m really looking forward to seeing him again at Nuart in Aberdeen in April.

After visiting the Dippy on Tour exhibition in Kelvingrove (well worth a visit), I dropped in on SWG3 before heading back into town for a pre-arranged tour of the Trades House in Glassford Street, this is a very interesting place with loads of the history of Glasgow.  I was there with a group of friends who were receiving an award from The Commonweal Fund.

During my day out I found some new street art, one by a guy called Plague Fisher (aka Craig Fisher) called Glasgow Kiss, which is just a pair of love dolphins, on the side of the BrewDog pub opposite Kelvingrove.

On the Paisley Road

I decided to head down to Paisley this morning to see Mark Worst’s latest piece of work. I was very impressed with the painting of his mate Scott. It’s in a little ‘garden’ area next to Leisureland on the High Street, some may remember his mural with a fox on the same wall.

Walking along Paisley High Street towards Leisureland, I noticed that the Little Book Transfer murals are still there on the empty shops, they can be seen on the LBT page here.

While I was on the Paisley Road I stopped off at the Pacitti Community Gardens to see Rogue-One’s latest work. This spectacular piece attracted plenty of media interest, it was on the front page of the Scotsman, in the Evening Times on Tuesday 19th March and The Metro even covered the story, well earned praise indeed.  Also on Paisley Road West is another nice community mural created by Rogue-One and EJEK using a design created by the local school pupils, as you can see, there was bright sunlight when I took this image, I’ll return later and get a better shot.

I will add all these images into the relevant pages in The Artists section.

Street Art Blues

I was in town yesterday and came across a ‘Climate Emergency’ protest in George Square.  A group of people were trying to emphasise their point by painting their footsteps in blue on the streets.

I was struck with the irony of the environmental impact of the blue paint (water soluble I was told), the blue plastic overshoes being issued, to be disposed of later and the 2 teams of council workers with powered pressure cleaners cleaning up after them.

Blackout

During a visit to SWG3 today I spotted Gaz-Mac and SCENT blacking out some of the walls in preparation for this year’s Yardworks.  I was nice to meet Mark (aka SCENT) and to put a face to the name, judging by his recent work in the yard he will be a prominent player in the Glasgow art scene.

Women on Walls

I took a trip down to SWG3 today to see a completed mural by a newly formed collaborative group of girls called the Cobolt Collective. The members of the group are Edda Karolina, Chelsea Frew, Erin Bradley-Scott, and Kat Loudon. As you can see, the work, in celebration of International Woman’s Day, is pretty special, I hope this is the start of large scale walls from this talented group.

While there I spotted a new piece, I think by Rogue One, which is a memorial to a girl called Hannah, There was also a fairly new Sci-Fi themed mural by a bunch called the SFM Crew from Dundee.

The Jim Jimmies

After our Strollin’ in Cologne, our Reykjavik Rambles and in preparation for our Ambles in America, Jim and I have signed up to take a Wee Wander in this year’s Kilt Walk.

As septuagenarians, we decided not to do the Mighty Stride or even the Big Stroll, so the Wee Wander, a leisurely 6 mile wander around the Moss O’Balloch park, on 28th of April, will do us fine.

We are walking as ‘The Jim Jimmies’ team and hope to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and will be looking for some sponsorship of our efforts.  Thanks to Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation, our chosen charity Cancer Research UK will receive an incredible 140% of the sponsorship we raise.  So for every £100 we raise, our charity will receive £140.  So watch this space on how to donate!

Woman in Black – 3

In town today with my mate Jim, for a couple of beers and lunch in the Raven on Renfield Street, as usual, the food, beer and surroundings were excellent and we were well served by Alex and the rest of the crew, they really know how to make us feel welcome.

I had read that the latest mural to be completed in Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square, in the form of the latest Study of a Woman In Black series mural by Street artist, James Klinge.  On James’ Instagram page he recently stated that he was unable to get a straight on photo of this piece, so off I went with my newish ultra wide angle lens to see how I would fare, I think I managed to capture the whole picture straight on, I will admit it was tight though.  This is a welcome addition to James’ body of work, which can be seen on his page on this site.
